A Lachlan Davis hat-trick delivered the school at 5-1 win over Wagga High School in the opening game of the Wagga Combined High Schools soccer competition.

Both teams traded shots on goal, but it was Kooringal who made the most of its attacking opportunities.

Wagga High made the early running, but couldn’t find the breakthrough and was eventually punished on the counter-attack.

Davis scored the opening goal of the game as he rushed onto a through ball from midfield to slot home.

The goal gave Kooringal confidence and it pushed forward, looking to extend the lead.

Davis completed his hat-trick before half-time as Kooringal put Wagga High to the sword.

Ethan O’Donnell and Shaun Moffat caused major headaches for the Wagga High defence and their momentum paid dividends.

Wagga High fought back in the second half, but had to withstand some early pressure from Kooringal. Daniel Rafter was superb in the middle of defence for Wagga High.

Sam Jenkins then caught the Kooringal defenders napping and charged half the field to score for Wagga High.

The goal revitalised Wagga High, as it took full advantage of a tiring Kooringal team and nearly scored a couple of goals. However, the success was short-lived for Wagga High.

The momentum swung again when Brady Sim put away Kooringal’s fourth goal by finishing a series of passes with a neat shot to the left of the keeper.

Sim then sealed the match by scoring the fifth and final goal, clinically finishing a pass across goal that left the keeper stranded.

Central defenders Jacob Sadler-Knight and Pierre Adriaenssens were excellent for Kooringal, while Issac DeVries was a standout for Wagga High.

Kooringal will play Wagga Christian College in round two of the Bill Turner Cup.

Wagga Christian College won through after defeating Mount Austin High School 3-nil.
