Premiers face-off for shield

08 Feb, 2012 05:30 AM
FARRER League premier The Rock-Yerong Creek will get the chance to pit itself against the best in the business when it takes on Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong in the Charity Shield next month.

AFL Riverina yesterday released the details about the annual pre-season showcase with the two respective premiers set to battle it out on Narrandera Sportsground on March 24.

The Charity Shield has become a regular feature on the pre-season calendar for GGGM as it prepares to challenge for a record fifth straight Riverina Football League (RFL) premiership.

It will be a good test for the Magpies, who have added Coolamon midfielder Ryan Chamberlain to an already strong playing list for its premiership defence.

Hume League premier Jindera will take on RFL runner-up Coolamon in the other game on the night.

AFL Riverina football operations manager Shane Buchanan hopes the special pre-season contest again proves a success.

“It’s always an interesting evening of footy and netball,” Buchanan said yesterday.

“It always seems to be a challenge getting a crowd over there to these games but hopefully it works out.

“We’re going to look at trying a few different things for next year.”

Netball will also feature prominently on the night.

RFL premier Narrandera will take on Farrer League grand final winners Northern Jets.

In the other game, Jindera will take on Charles Sturt University.

AFL Riverina looked into the idea of playing an under 17 game between premiers Turvey Park and Temora but the game fell through.

All profits raised on the night will go to the Wagga-based Richmond Fellowship, which is a not-for-profit organisation that provides support programs, accommodation and hope for people with mental illnesses.

Meanwhile, AFL Riverina hopes to learn more about its Farrer League under 17 competition this week.

TRYC will give AFL Riverina an answer today, while MCUE is confident it will push ahead with a second under 17 team, who will play in the Farrer League.

In other developments, AFL Riverina and Netball NSW have combined to advertise for a part-time role of Riverina development officer.

The role is 21 hours a week, of which one day will be spent working for AFL Riverina on netball, and two days a week for NSW Netball.

AFL NSW-ACT has provided office space while AFL Riverina has made a financial contribution for the role to get off the ground.
