NORTH Melbourne assistant coach Darren Crocker does not have sweet memories of his only football excursion to Narrandera.
Crocker played for the Kangaroos against the Sydney Swans in a Country Day match at Narrandera Sportsground in 1986 – and the Kangaroos copped an
83-point pasting in front of 9000 fans.
The Swans were 90 minutes late to the ground due to a flight schedule change in Sydney, but the delay did not take the sting out of Warwick Capper, who proceeded to boot seven goals.
Crocker, who played alongside some famous names in the 1986 game, recalled the game yesterday, declaring the Kangaroos will be looking for a different outcome against the Swans in the NAB Challenge tomorrow night.
“It’s a bit of a blur to be honest, I can’t believe it was 24 years ago,” he said yesterday.
“I know that Warwick Capper had a day out against us and kicked about seven goals.
“It wasn’t pretty for North Melbourne and I was recently reminded that we were beaten by more than 80 points so I’m hoping the same thing doesn’t happen this time around or I’ll be reluctant to come back.”
Crocker remembers the 1986 team was not short of notable players, including several who retain a high profile in AFL.
“I know Andrew Demetriou was in the side along with the Krakouer brothers and our (current) chief of football Donald McDonald,” Crocker said.
“ I can’t remember Donald getting too many kicks though.”
Tomorrow night’s NAB Challenge is the last official round of pre-season games before the season proper starts on March 25.
With midfielder Ed Lower sidelined after breaking his leg against Hawthorn at the weekend, there is an opportunity for an up and coming player to push for senior selection at the Kangaroos.
