SOUTHERN Sports Academy cycling coach Iain Hume believes emerging Wagga riders Max Housden and Jeremy Scott must be encouraged to stay in the sport for "the long haul".
Hume said yesterday it is imperative cyclists with the talent and potential of Houdsen and Scott do not drift away from cycling as they get older.
"That's always the challenge," Hume said.
Housden and Scott displayed their immense promise when they bagged three medals at the NSW Junior Track Championships at Dunc Gray Velodrome in Sydney at the weekend.
Current national talent identification squad member Housden won two gold medals at the meet and Scott won a silver medal.
In a command performance, Housden won all his sprint qualifiers before taking out the two-lap sprint final over Bankstown's Travis Smedley.
Housden also triumphed the time trial, fractionally missing out on a national junior record time in the process.
He was close to the current national junior record of 11.96 seconds.
Scott, who is an endurance specialist, recorded the second-fastest qualifying time in the two-kilometre pursuit before claiming a silver medal in the final, which was won by current highly-acclaimed Caleb Ewan.
Hume said Housden and Scott, who are products of the Southern Sports Academy, rode in "different spheres" and underwent diverse training regimes.
"It's exactly like Usain Bolt compared to a 3000m runner," Hume said.
"Max has to do the shorter more intense training and Jeremy the longer stuff, which is just as hard."
With Housden and Scott favoured to gain selection in the NSW junior track team to compete at the upcoming national titles, Hume said he hoped the two rising stars would stay in the sport and fulfil their dreams and potential.
"In terms of longevity I'd hope they are still riding in 10 or 12 years," Hume said.
The astute cycling coach said Housden would need special dedication as track cycling was not regarded as a lucrative sporting career.
Housden has risen from sub-junior to junior events and been tagged a rider of untapped ability through his involvement with the national ID program.
While Housden has enjoyed great success at major meets, Scott actually claimed his first state medal at the weekend.
