FORMER Wagga fast bowler Ben Oakley has been invited to train with Victoria following his impressive performance against the West Indies last week.
West Indies captain Chris Gayle called for Oakley to be given a state contract after the left-arm quick went some way toward reeling the touring party in during its clash with the Prime Minister's XI.
Gayle tore the Prime Minister's XI attack to shreds on his way to 146 off just 89 balls as the West Indies compiled a stunning 5-399 from its 45 overs.
Gayle, however, had a lot of time for the former Wagga RSL opening bowler and was surprised to hear he was not aligned with a state team.
"He bowled well, honestly he bowled well, he's a local guy? He deserves one [a state contract],'' Gayle said.
Oakley finished the day with 1-56 off nine overs and managed to bowl Dwayne Smith for 19.
The performance has helped win the attention of the Victorian Bushrangers, who have invited Oakley to train with the squad.
Oakley yesterday played down the importance of the situation.
"It was meant to be (yesterday) afternoon but I've had to reschedule," Oakley said yesterday.
"It's only a training session though."
The representative appearance capped off a remarkable three years for Oakley since he left Wagga for Canberra.
Oakley has taken all before him in the Canberra competition and impressed for ACT in the national futures league competition.
Oakley is happy with his blossoming cricket career, but said he wasn't pinning his hopes on a potential move to state cricket.
"I moved here (to Canberra) for my job and my cricket's taken off since," Oakley said.
"My game's progressed since I moved from Wagga, but that's just come naturally and from playing a better level of cricket.
"I can't plan on anything like (state cricket), I'm just happy with how things are going for the moment."
Oakley described the Prime Minister's XI match as an "unreal experience".
