Bulls charge toward finals

08 Feb, 2010 08:50 AM
LAKE Albert continued its charge towards the finals series with an impressive 76-run win over Kooringal Colts at McPherson Oval on Saturday.

The Bulls have all guns blazing two matches out from finals and cast aside Colts with another polished performance with the ball.

Lake Albert set Kooringal 170 to win and Colts were a big chance entering the second day's play at 1-49.

But two inches of rain 24 hours before the second day helped Lake Albert and made the bowling conditions favourable as they trounced Colts for 93.

Lake Albert is always confident it can defend anything over 150 and the theory proved right again.

Bulls captain Brett Davies admitted things played into his team's hands.

"The conditions were massively in our favour," Davies said.

"A couple of inches of rain always helps when you're having a bowl.

"It was damp but I've played on worse.

"To our credit though we bowled and fielded really well."

Phil Leyshon (4-10) and Davies (3-31) were the stars with the ball.

Davies said Leyshon came into his own.

"Phil bowled really, really well," Davies said.

"He's spent the last couple of years playing in similar conditions in England so his ability to bowl full and straight and let the deck to the rest was a big asset."

Lake Albert took first innings points and with a 76-run advantage it tried its luck at an outright victory.

Kooringal made 3-80 before the teams agreed to end the match.

"We wanted to have a red hot crack at the outright win," Davies said.

"I hoped we could get four or five early ones but it wasn't to be.

"I was really happy with the way the boys stuck to their guns all day though, especially our fielding, it's been really good lately."

Sam Whitfield shone with the bat for Colts, top scoring in both innings with 34 and 41 not out.

Colts were also forced to bat with only 10 players due to tail ender Aaron Morrison being hospitalised with a stomach bug.
