Wagga police have issued a warning to drivers to heed the road rules when flashing lights and/or signs or flags are out in school zone times or face the consequences after school children were at times in danger near roads last term.
"Highway patrol will be addressing a number of concerns which were raised toward the end of last school term, particularly on the Bourke Street crossings for Mount Austin Public School," Detective Acting Inspector Michael Handley said.
"When approaching a school crossing, as soon as someone is about to enter the crossing or is waiting to cross, it is the driver of the car that has to stop and give way to those pedestrians.
"If there is a school crossing supervisor there, then when the Supervisor faces their stop sign at drivers, they are to stop and give way to all pedestrians.
"And in both cases, the driver is not to move his or her vehicle again until all persons are completely off the school crossing."
School zones operate during the peak student traffic times of 8am to 9.30am and from 2.30pm to 4pm and those who flout the law can be fined $441 and lose four demerit points.
"The reality of school crossing safeguards is that we are talking minimising the risks to the safety of our children when they're going to or leaving school," Detective Handley said.
"No one wants a tragedy to occur."
