Wet and wild

06 Sep, 2010 12:00 AM
WILD weather has kept Riverina State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers on their toes all weekend.

Minor flooding in and around Tumut was the worst of the situation, however, more is expected today in Gundagai and Wagga as mountain rain flows down the Murrumbidgee.

A flood warning has been issued by the SES for the Murrumbidgee Valley.

In Tumut the Riverglade Caravan Park was evacuated as flood waters inundated the area, with caravans being moved to the showgrounds and cabin residents moved to nearby hotels.

Last week SES volunteers were asked to remain on call for the weekend and the request was vindicated as more than 60 volunteers were needed across the Riverina.

SES regional controller James McTavish said it was lucky they were well prepared.

"We've got volunteers spread from Wagga to Junee, Gundagai and Tumut and our preparations certainly made flood evacuations in Tumut a lot easier.

"The weather pattern is expected to ease in the next couple of days but another system is on its way and should arrive by Thursday, so we will continue to be on alert."

The huge rainfall that was predicted didn't eventuate the Tumut River peaked at three metres, while the Murrumbidgee is expected to peak at seven metres in Wagga today.

While there were three landslides blocked roads around Talbingo and Adelong was very nearly cut off when the river level almost reached the bridge.

Numerous trees were uprooted by the high winds, while some roofs around Wagga were also damaged.

Powerlines were damaged in Holbrook, Culcairn and Nangus while a tree fell on a car at Currawarna yesterday afternoon.
