Weather no show-stopper

06 Sep, 2010 12:00 AM
ADVERSE weather conditions failed to dampen the enthusiasm of excited show goers at the revered Narrandera Show on Saturday.

While heavy rains dramatically cut crowd numbers, the families that did brave the conditions enjoyed an entertaining day fuelled by sideshow action and live wrestling.

Narrandera Show president David Marwood yesterday admitted he was surprised by the commitment residents had shown in supporting the show, estimating 1400 people had strolled through the gates on Saturday.

"We were really pleased and really impressed to see just how many people did brave the wind and rain to take part in the show," he said.

"A lot of people were actually turning up in the rain but that did not stop them getting in and having a good time.

"We think our gate was probably cut in half or a little more but overall we were actually quite surprised and happy by how many people we did get."

Mr Marwood said the show's newest addition, live wrestling, had proven to be the event's most popular attraction.

"The wrestling was definitely as popular as we had hoped," he said.

"We wanted to go with something a little bit different and because wrestling hasn't been out in the country in a while we thought we'd give it a go.

"From little kids to the big kids at heart, it was a hit."

Despite the strong wind and rain that hampered the show, thrill-seekers still had the chance to grab an adrenaline fix at the event's sideshow.

"The rides were really popular but unfortunately not all the rides could operate in the wind," Mr Marwood said.

"A few operators couldn't put their rides up because of the wind but the ones that did, tried their best to make the most of the day.

"For the first hour or so the weather was pretty bad but then it broke for a few hours and there was the chance to get out and have a ride."

Pioneer Hall not only provided a respite from the weather but plenty of entertainment, hosting school displays, fashion parades and a jazz band which played throughout the afternoon.

Mr Marwood said the weather had forced the cancellation of the show's popular evening fireworks display and all horse events.
