WAGGA schools will be in varying states of closure today as NSW teachers go on strike over pay demands and the controversial teacher transfer system.
Eight public schools across Wagga will have limited supervision while Lake Albert Public is the only school scheduled to close.
Teachers will begin stop work action at 9am with a meeting to be held at the Wagga RSL. Classes are expected to resume at 11am.
Wagga’s Teachers Federation representative Deb Martin said all schools should have informed parents of supervision details.
“We have up to two hours of industrial action planned for tomorrow and that may well mean no supervision,” Mrs Martin said.
“Schools should have sent letters home to parents informing them of the amount of supervision available for the children.”
South East regional organiser Khyiah Angel said it was obvious the Iemma Government had lost interest in education.
“The arbitrary abolition of the statewide transfer system severely compromises some schools’ ability to provide a curriculum guarantee to students in rural communities,” Ms Angel said.
“Adding insult to injury the government is offering teachers a 2.5 per cent pay rise whilst inflation is running at 4.5 per cent.”
Department of Education Riverina regional director, Colin Parker said the new system still provided teachers with a choice.
“Importantly, for remote rural communities, schools and teachers, the data from the first full term of operation shows that incentive transfers still count,” Mr Parker said.
