RELOCATION: The iconic Wagga Beach Caravan Park is moving, says council’s director corporate services, Andrew Crakanthorp (pictured), with the current area to be returned to public recreational use.

The iconic Wagga Beach Caravan Park is moving and will be replaced with a totally refurbished public recreational area as part of the Riverside Masterplan.Wagga City Council has started talks to relocate the caravan park to the Wiradjuri Reserve about one kilometre downstream from its current site. The ambitious relocation is expected to be finalised in just two years.Council’s partner in the Riverside Project is the NSW Land and Property Management Authority (LPMA) which is driving the park relocation. It is currently finalising a development application which will outline the full details of the new caravan park.“Quite early in the piece (the Riverside Masterplan authors) saw the potential for returning the current caravan park to public use,” council’s director corporate services Andrew Crakanthorp said.He said the existing area will boast more amenities, including extra barbecues.Current lessee of the caravan park, Charles Ryall, said he is excited by the move and hopes to re-sign as tenant at the new location.“It’s all pretty positive, it will be brand new ... and we won’t be on a flood plain anymore, either,” he said. The park was evacuated twice last year, including all cabins, due to the severe floods.“We came to the park knowing that it floods and that’s just part of the business,” Mr Ryal said.Mr Crakanthorp said the new site is slightly higher above the river and will be protected by flood barriers. The project is expected to be funded using both private and public funds but no costings have been released yet.
