Victoria Hotel added to pubs and clubs list

21 Nov, 2009 01:00 AM

THE Victoria Hotel has been added to the NSW Government's most violent pubs and clubs list.

"The Vic" is one of 66 venues across NSW to be placed on the list due to continued violence in and around the area and has now had a number of strict regulations imposed on it.

However, in better news for Wagga, the Capital Nightclub has been removed from the list after an extensive program to stamp out late night, alcohol-fuelled violence.

The Victoria Hotel, in the top block of Baylis Street, is regarded as a level two venue with 12 to 18 assaults per year and must now stop serving alcohol 30 minutes prior to closure, no glass after midnight and alcohol time-outs or free food and water for 10 minutes every hour after midnight.

The hotel has already self-imposed a number of regulations on itself in an attempt to stop the violence but police and the State Government want to see more results.

Hotel licencee David Vearing said several steps had already been taken to improve safety.

"In January we had to improve several aspects of our safety and now we probably do more than any other pub in Wagga to stop violence and I'm quite confident next time the list is released we won't be on it," he said.

The Victoria Hotel will now have to register every incident on an assault register with maximum penalties for licencees of 12 months jail or $11,000 in fines for failing to comply with the new conditions.

Meanwhile, the Capital Nightclub, long thought of as one of Wagga most violent nightspots, has been removed from the list after a vast improvement in security inside and outside the venue.
