IT WAS a unique Valentine's Day present, a love note on the Hampden Bridge.
While it may have won hearts on the romantic front, the sign may also have landed the amorous guy or girl a $625 fine.
The sign was hung last weekend, no doubt an attempt to upstage all men in the Valentine's Day present stakes, but given the condition of Hampden Bridge it could have ended in tragedy.
Wagga City Council closed the bridge to pedestrians some years ago and erected signs and fences to warn people of the dangers.
If people are seen on the bridge by council officers or police they can be fined or even charged with trespass under the Road Regulations.
As the bridge continues to deteriorate, mayor Kerry Pascoe urged people to stay off.
"We've had signs and fences put up so you hope that people adhere to those warnings and stay off the bridge," Coucillor Pascoe said.
"Especially not to put up signs."
Cr Pascoe said the council will make a final determination on the Hampden Bridge when the Riverside master plan is finalised.
