THERE were dramatic scenes in Ashmont yesterday as police cars rushed to respond to reports of a woman brandishing a gun in a residential street.

Police later said the incident was a neighbourhood dispute and they believed no guns were involved, but at the time at least eight marked police cars swarmed to the area around 10.20am.

An ambulance was also on standby as a precaution, while several streets went into lockdown.

Officers assembled in Tobruk Street, where they donned bullet-proof vests and blocked all access to Connorton Avenue.

Residents of Tobruk Street were surprised to see so much action in their neighbourhood, standing out the front of their houses to watch the action unfold but able to provide little information about what was going on.

Shortly after 11am the commotion died down as access was restored to Tobruk Street and most of Connorton Avenue.

About six police cars were still in the street at the western end of Connorton Avenue, where the incident had unfolded, with police speaking to residents.

Groups of residents were milling around at the front of their houses, talking about the incident in what they said was normally a fairly quiet area.

One nearby resident, who did not wish to

be identified, said the morning's events had been the result of a neighbourhood dispute.

She said there had been disagreements between the two women "for years" but normally there was no trouble in the street.

"It's very quiet in this street, everyone knows everyone else," she said.

The dispute arose between two women who lived across the road from each other.

"She started at her this morning walking the kids to school," the resident said.

"Then when she came back they kept at it and she went in the house and came out with a great big gun."

But Wagga police crime manager Rod Smith said police did not believe there was a firearm involved in the incident.

"We don't believe there was a gun involved, we have seized a slug gun but we don't believe that was involved either," he said.

"There was no siege as such."

He said the incident was a neighbourhood dispute and no arrests had been made.

Seriously? "Drunks fall over, drugs cause violence." What are the AHA smoking if they think the worst a drunk person can do is fall over? Did my friend get king hit and go into hospital with brain injuries cos someone was on drugs? I don't think so. That's a terrible message to be sending young people.

I'm so sick of never hearing about the impact drugs have. Mixing drugs and alcohol is pretty much the norm.

It's easier to blame the hoteliers rather than acknowdge that ecstacy and other illicit drugs are out there in the community . Police should be focussing on the drug manufactures and sellers rather than arresting people for petty bail breachers!
