MORE cash has been splashed at the Wagga campus of the TAFE NSW-Riverina Institute, with $6.5 million being allocated for new training infrastructure.

Seven NSW TAFE Institutes will share in almost $40 million from the Federal Government's Training Infrastructure Investment for Tomorrow (TIIFT), Minister for Education and Training Verity Firth announced yesterday.

The Wagga funds, totalling $6.58 million, will be used to establish the Centre for Inland Engineering–Electrotechnology "to provide qualifications in current and emerging areas in ... electrotechnology".

Head of Wagga campus TAFE NSW-Riverina Institute Pam Green could not be happier about the future of her campus.

"It's a great initiative, great for the region, the Riverina Institute, it's a good outcome ... really exciting," Mrs Green said.

"It's come on the back of the wonderful news we had earlier in the week from the state budget for another component of this precinct ... for a fitting and machining component."

The funding will get the ball rolling for the construction of the centre, which TAFE NSW said is catering "to growing regional demand for apprentices in this area, as well as the demand for professional development".

"We have increased demand for a whole range of courses that we are providing for industries as well as growing numbers of apprentices, we can really provide training for these people in a facility that's state of the art," Mrs Green said.

Companies supporting the Wagga campus, such as Air Services Australia, Country Energy and Snowy Hydro will also benefit from the establishment of the centre, which should be up and running sooner rather than later.

"I understand the electrotechnology facility funds will come through on the first of July, and (the centre) is planned to be completed by June next year, which is quite a quick timeframe for this type of facility," Mrs Green said.
