Students are left stranded on new service's first day

THERE have been mixed responses around Wagga about the new Busabout school system after buses were running later than scheduled and a six-year-old boy from Turvey Park was left stranded when his bus didn't turn up on Monday afternoon.

James Henson was meant to get off his bus at 3.40pm at the bus stop near his home but his father, James, kept waiting for half an hour before he decided the bus was a no-show.

"I was getting worried that my son didn't get on a bus and was left at school," Mr Henson said.

"I asked a bus driver and he inquired over his two-way about the late bus and a few minutes later I got a call from my partner, who said there was a stuff-up with the buses."

Mr Henson said his son and three other children got left behind at school after the bus didn't come to pick them up.

"I'm not really happy about the changes, it should be better co-ordinated, but that's just the way it is," he said.

A Busabout employee was driving around the area checking up on the new system and noticed the four children who had missed their bus.

After calling their parents, he drove them home.

A mother from Yerong Creek, who did not wish to be named, said her teenage daughter was stuck on a bus from Wagga to Yerong Creek for almost two hours travelling around Glenfield and Ashmont before heading out of town.

"Some students were unaware of the changes, some kids missed buses and one bus had to wait to connect with another so I think it was a total mismatch," she said.

"The only plus I can see with Busabout is it will help the young kids get to jobs in Wagga, travelling there on the Busabout."

Busabout depot manager, Matthew Bell said there were some teething problems with the first day of the Busabout system but issues should clear up by the end of the week.

"There were some teething problems, but I think we managed them well," he said.

"We had separate buses to cater for problems ... it all worked out reasonably well."
