Eleven bolts of lightning hit power lines causing power outages in Wagga, Tarcutta, Euberta and Collingullie, among other centres ? some of which were still without electricity late last night.
Traffic lights all the way along Baylis Street went out prompting police to intervene, while the police station and Sturt Mall were also left without power.
Flash flood warnings were issued and in Wagga the Wollundry Lagoon threatened to break its banks and cover Ivan Jack Drive.
"Power lines were sparking and there were trees down on Narrandera Road," a Wagga police spokesman said last night.
"We've requested council come in to help."
By 10pm police and council were responding to a tree which had fallen on power lines and reports the underpass at the corner of Edward and Tarcutta streets was flooded.
