ONE hot weather record has been broken, another has been equalled and a third is under threat as the Riverina’s heatwave marches on.The scorching weather has sent sales of air conditioners through the roof, with The Good Guys and Harvey Norman in Wagga selling out of several types.Saturday’s 41.6 degrees Celsius was the first time there have been six days of 40 degrees or more in January since records started being kept at the Bureau of Meteorology’s Wagga weather station at Forest Hill in 1941.The previous record was five days, set in 1952, 1979 and 2001.While the average maximum temperature last month just fell short of 1979’s record – 35 degrees compared to 35.8 degrees – the number of days of 35 degrees or more equalled the record of 19 set in the 1979.Yesterday’s 41.6 degrees maximum just after 5pm was the fifth day in a row where the temperature passed the old 100 degrees Fahrenheit mark (37.8 degrees Celsius). If today reaches the predicted maximum of 39 the record of six consecutive days will be equalled, and will be bettered tomorrow if the expected top of 38 is also reached. There is some possibility of isolated showers and thunderstorms for parts of the region today.“There is a weak trough coming through, but it is most likely to affect just the south east,” said Wagga weather station technical officer, Robbie Lennard.
