Recognition for keeping town tidy

04 Nov, 2009 12:00 AM

WAGGA won two first-place awards and was placed second in the overall category at the Tidy Town Awards over the weekend, scoring highly for community involvement, attitude to the environment and sustainability.

Wagga won the Wildlife Corridors and Habitats Conservation Award for the LEP Biodiversity plan, which is the first of its kind in the state.

Wagga Kurrajong Recyclers contributed to Wagga winning its second category, for Waste Management and Litter Reduction.

"Community involvement played a high part in (winning the awards)," Wagga Tidy Town Committee chairman Bill Williams said. "In smaller towns over 50 percent of the community support projects, in a big town like Wagga we still get 10 per cent which is really fantastic."

Mr Williams said the overall look of the town and the community's attitude to sustaining water was a big plus with the assessors.

"We are one of the nicest cities not every town can have public parks like ours, they cost money and are a great thing for tourism," he said.

"Sustainability also scored highly which takes in the amount of recycling and water control we have."

Mr Williams said assessors were positive about Wagga but also mentioned that the town had obvious drawbacks.

"Wagga does get knocked back because of places like the Mill and the Caltex service station, and the Shell depot but that has been cleaned up ... you can't hide them.

"If tourists see these things they wouldn't like it," he said.

"It's the biggest worry and the Tidy Council don't have control over it."

"In the last six years, Wagga has placed third once and and second five times in the overall category, which is the most prestigious award and to win it would be the best advertisement for Wagga."
