AGE was clearly no boundary for Ena Hancock as she celebrated her 101st birthday with a piece of cake and a colourful smile.
Four generations of family came together on Tuesday at Allawah Lodge, Coolamon, for a memorable birthday party. Residents of the Lodge joined in, surrounded by balloons and afternoon treats as they shared fond stories of Ena and her remarkable life so far.
Diane Butler and daughter Madison, who turned 11 years old the same day, travelled from Melbourne to share the special occasion with their grandmother and great-grandmother.
“It’s quite remarkable really, that Madison was born on the same date. It’s very special for the both of them,” Diane said.
Ena was born on February 7, 1911 at Ganmain.
She and late husband Ernie raised four children on a farm near Coolamon, with extended family always close by.
She is a passionate woman with hobbies ranging from cooking to craft.
Her talents won her numerous prizes at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.
Ena’s son, Les Hancock, recounts many times where although her eyesight had deteriated, she happily made craft.
“She loves her tapestries, she is very creative,” he said.
She says the biggest challenge in such a rapidly changing world is dealing with new methods of communication.
“It’s still such a novelty for her to be able to watch events being broadcast from across the globe,” said her eldest daughter, Norma Telvin.
So what’s her advice for living a long and prosperous life?
“Keeping a positive attitude, and not dwelling on the past.
"She looks to the future and enjoys the company of family and friends immensely,” Norma said.
