Police put drivers on notice

21 Nov, 2009 01:00 AM
THERE will be more police on the street this weekend as Operation Raid is launched across NSW.

NSW Police assistant commissioner John Hartley joined Wagga police yesterday putting drivers on notice: "you will be caught if you drink drive, speed or break the law in any way".

There have been more than 400 deaths on NSW roads this year with a majority occurring on country roads and the southern region has seen 88 of them.

According to assistant commissioner Hartley speed and alcohol account for 60 per cent of all fatal accidents while fatigue results in another 25 per cent of deaths.

While the road toll has dropped significantly in recent years police still want drivers to take care on the road and watch their speed, fatigue and road conditions while travelling to 'schoolies' or on holidays.

Assistant commissioner Hartley said it was important to help decrease the road toll.

"Almost two-thirds of deaths occur on country roads and most are country people dying within an hour away from their home," he said.

"We are having a serious impact on the road toll reduction, it is more than 200 deaths less than just two years ago but 400 people is still far too many."

Assistant commissioner Hartley said initiatives such as the speed limit reduction on the Newell Highway was just one way to stop fatal accidents.

"We support the reduction from 110kmh to 100kmh, any speed reduction makes the road safer and will help stop people from dying," he said.
