GIVEN some of the horrific figures in the past, three people caught drink-driving in Wagga on the weekend is a slight improvement.
Police nabbed one man in the early hours of yesterday morning, while highway patrol officers hauled in two drivers for driving under the influence, including a P-plate driver, over the two days.
A 28-year-old man was pulled over on Trail Street shortly after 3am yesterday for a random breath test. The test allegedly returned a positive result of .08 and he was subsequently charged with a low-range prescribed concentration of alchol (PCA).
When highway patrol officers pulled over a male driver on Nordlingen Drive for a random breath test, he had to be charged for mid-range drink-driving. The 28-year-old male allegedly blew the bag to return a reading of .110, more than twice the legal limit of .05 for fully licensed drivers.
By the time the weekend was over, it was not just the men in their late 20s getting behind the wheel after a drink.
At 1.15am yesterday, an 18-year-old female provisional driver was stopped by a highway patrol car on Roma Street. With a legal limit of zero, police say the driver returned a positive breath test of .025.
Inspector Paul Huxtable of Wagga police said while numbers were low at the weekend, they could jump again at the drop of a hat.
"We might have eight or nine next week, it depends on the weather," he said. "When we had that rain we had lots of PCAs.
"I'd like to think that the publicity of the number of offences would've worked to deter people from driving (after drinking). Particularly in town, there's no need for that."
