Notorious stretch to get a safety upgrade

A NEW crossing is under construction on a stretch of road previously considered a "no-go zone" for pedestrians.

The dangerous passage across Ivan Jack Drive in central Wagga, between Wollundry Lagoon and the Victory Memorial Gardens, should have a pedestrian crossing in place by the end of the week.

The sweeping bend and the speed at which drivers are known to accelerate around the curve have traditionally led to pedestrians shying away from crossing at the location.

Wagga City Council and the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) have jointly funded the installation of the crossing, valued at $17,000.

"The project aims to provide pedestrian protection at the crossing, a high-traffic road, between two popular recreation and visitor areas," said Richard Lasek, Wagga City Council's manager of civil infrastructure.

"The location of the pedestrian refuge was agreed to between council and the RTA, as well as the traffic committee. It is positioned away from intersections and the large refuge in the middle allows pedestrians to cross one section at a time, while maintaining a clear line of sight from each access point."

Council's access committee, which looks for ways to improve access for people with disabilities, wheelchairs and people who use prams and strollers, identified Ivan Jack Drive as a street in which access could be improved.

Modifications have been made to the existing foothpaths and ramps constructed at the kerbs to allow access for prams and strollers.

The crossing will not have zebra stripes, which require motorists to come to a complete stop to allow for pedestrian traffic.

Instead, it will provide for a designated refuge island, allowing pedestrians to assess for themselves the safest time to cross the road.
