A WOMAN and her baby son own nothing but the clothes on their back after they lost every one of their belongings in a devastating house fire in Big Springs.
A fundraiser is being held next month to help Pep Asante and her eight-month-old son rebuild their lives after a log rolled out of their fireplace and onto the lounge room floor, causing a fast-paced blaze which engulfed the entire home.
"I have nothing at all, it is all gone," she said.
"The house is all burnt down, there is nothing left so it is very, very sad."
Mrs Asante and her son were in their underwear preparing to have a shower at about 6pm on July 11, when the fire alarm signalled flames in the house.
"I saw the log from the fire, and I was going to try and kill the fire but I thought to get my son outside first," she said.
"I tried the nearest door, but it wouldn't open, so I had to go and try a different one.
"By the time I got to the door to get outside, the power went out and it was very dark.
"I was screaming, and I just grabbed a chair and hit the door several times to open it and get out."
She then raced to her car but realised the keys were still inside her house, so she began to run through paddocks to her neighbours house up a hill and a fair distance away in the dark.
"I didn't know how fast fire could travel," she said.
"I can't describe how I was feeling at the time, but I was terrified.
"When we were safe and it all sunk in I cried like a baby, I don't know if I will ever get over it."
More than 35 firefighters arrived at the O'Brien's Creek Road property around 7.15pm and spent hours on the blaze, but were unable to save the house.
Mrs Asante's husband is overseas in Ghana, and she was in the process of filling out documents to file for his Visa but now all of that is gone and she has to start the lengthy process again.
The Garden Court, where Mrs Asante is a casual employee, in conjunction with Kings Church are holding a fundraising luncheon on Sunday August 8 from 12 noon to help the family back on their feet.
Residents are encouraged to book ahead of the event with a cost of $30 per head, by phoning 6925 5660.
The total amount of money collected from the bookings will be donated to Mrs Asante.
