WAGGA netballers have another reason to look forward to the coming season - new courts.
Wagga City Council's Environment and Community Standing committee last night gave preliminary approval for a $1.2 million rebuild of the Wagga Netball Centre.
Due to the unsafe condition of the courts, it was decided to redevelop the Kooringal Road courts, and it is expected new concrete will be laid by the start of the new season in April.
The Wagga Netball Association (WNA) demanded new courts as any amount of rain made the surface dangerously slippery and led to a number of games being cancelled or postponed.
The laying of concrete will cost $860,000, while after the season non-slip acrylic will be laid and spectator seating installed, costing $330,000.
Council intends to use the full $544,000 from the Federal Government's Regional and Local Community Infrastructure funding as well a contribution from WNA and developer contributions.
WNA also met last night to discuss the situation.
The association is considering a contribution of $150,000 as well as the replacement of spectator seating around the courts.
Councillor Wayne Geale had an issue with the funding but was ultimately voted down four to one.
"We're guaranteeing a budget surplus without any input from councillors when there are other projects such as the boatramp and Lake Albert that could benefit," he said.
The report tabled last night recommended $167,000 be used so that the work could be finished before the start of the season.
A final decision will be made at the full council meeting to be held on February 22.
