Wagga's Michael McCormack overcame four other pre-selection candidates to become the next Nationals candidate for the federal seat of the Riverina. In what returning officers described as an "extremely close" election, Mr McCormack toppled fellow pre-selection candidates Wes Fang, John Minogue, William Maslin and Mark Hoskinson.Following the announcement, Mr McCormack, much like most of the 140-strong crowd of National Party members, was buzzing at the result."I'm feeling very happy at the moment, as well as very honoured and mindful of the responsibility I now have," Mr McCormack said.On the matter of the Liberal Party also putting forward a candidate for the next election, Mr McCormack said he was looking forward to the challenge."If you're a Liberal Party voter, a dyed in the wool Liberal Party voter, you would really feel disenchanted if the Liberals didn't put up a candidate," he said."Having said that, it's going to make it a real contest."During his address following the announcement of results, Mr McCormack admitted he had been apprached "a couple of times" by the Liberal Party, but felt the Nationals was the right way to go.See Monday's Daily Advertiser for more.
