MARIJUANA plants with an estimated street value of $1.25 million have been discovered in three hidden plantations in a forest near Tumut.
The 624-plant haul from Bondo State Forest on Sunday is being hailed as one of the region's largest busts in recent times with officers from the NSW drugs squad planning to spend more time in the Riverina as a result.
Commander of the NSW drug squad, detective superintendent Nick Bingham said the 624 mature plants had caught his attention.
Drug squad officers went on a walking tour of the forest last week.
"They found evidence of old plantations during their walk through so we decided it was worth a closer look," he said.
"We got the chopper out and made the discovery."
"We'll be spending more time in the area as a result.
"It's getting towards the end of the growing season and they were quite mature.
"We got to them probably just before the growers did."
Det Supt Bingham said an elaborate irrigation system sucking water from two large dams and activated by electronic timers were also seized.
The equipment has been sent to Sydney for forensic testing in the hope of making an arrest.
The plants are on their way to Griffith where they will be destroyed along with more than 100 plants discovered at a property in the city on Monday.
During that bust, drug squad officers seized 107 plants, 25 kilograms of dried cannabis, firearms and almost $20,000 cash.
Three people, two men and a woman, have been arrested and charged over the Griffith raid.
