THE townships of Beckom and Boree Creek took a walk down memory lane at the weekend hosting celebrations to mark their centenaries.At Boree Creek, about 600 people took to the streets on Saturday to mark the town's 100th birthday.Centenary committee secretary Jane Dunlevey said some former residents travelled from Darwin and Western Australia to be part of the celebrations, while one woman and her children travelled from England to visit her parents who still lived at Boree Creek."The day was a great success," she said."It was a great day and everyone enjoyed themselves."The town commissioned sculptor Ron Clarke to make a centenary plaque, depicting a horse-drawn wagon laden with sacks of wheat, which was unveiled on Saturday morning.Mrs Dunlevey said the plaque was the highlight of the celebrations, alongside the showing of a DVD containing home movies, old photographs and audio from the opening of the town hall in 1925.At Beckom, centenary celebrations will continue today, with the centenary committee hosting brunch in the park to wrap-up an action-packed weekend.The township began celebrating its centenary on Friday night with the launch of a book about the history of Beckom.On Saturday, residents took part in a street parade, the unveiling of a centenary plaque and a Bushman's Relay.Yesterday's festivities included an old-fashioned school picnic day and a reunion dinner for Beckom's sports stars.
