A MENTAL and physical assessment has been ordered for a teenager accused of stabbing a young man in the thigh during a bloody confrontation at Wagga's Sturt Mall shopping centre on Monday.
The 17-year-old, who cannot be named because he is aged under 18, appeared in Wagga Children's Court yesterday afternoon, nearly 24 hours after the alleged attack.
Duty solicitor for yesterday's court proceedings, PC Reddy, told magistrate Anthony Murray there would be no application for bail.
Mr Murray noted that at the time of Monday's incident the teenager was on bail for earlier alleged offences and said the charge laid after the alleged stabbing - wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm - was a strictly indictable matter, which means it must be dealt with in the district court jurisdiction.
The boy sat quietly in the dock for the 20 minutes he was in court, looking behind him once at his parents who were in the court room to support their son.
Two medical reports were tendered to Mr Murray, and Mr Reddy said he was seeking psychiatric care for the boy while he was in custody.
Mr Murray ordered mental and physical assessments on the boy upon entering custody and attached the two medical reports to the remand warrant.
The magistrate ordered that all charges currently faced by the boy be brought together with the latest charge when he comes back to court on March 17.
Bail was formally refused.
At the end of proceedings, Mr Murray asked the boy if he understood what was happening with his case.
The boy replied: "No, I don't."
Mr Murray then explained the situation to him again before the boy was taken away.
The teenager went to court after spending the night under police guard at Wagga Base Hospital.
He had been taken to hospital for assessment after swallowing water in a flooded storm water channel he dived into while allegedly trying to get away from police at Springvale.
Police said the teenager was a non-swimmer and was rescued from the water by a senior constable.
Police found the boy at Springvale, on Wagga's southern outskirts, about 30 minutes after he allegedly stabbed an 18-year-old Turvey Park man during a fight at the Sturt Mall and fled the scene.
