KEEN mountain bike riders are encouraged to get out and test their abilities in a bid to raise money for a founding member of the Mountain Bike Club of Wagga.

Stuart Hume suffered spinal injuries and a punctured lung last year when he fell off his motorbike while marshalling at the McDonald's Classic.

Now back in Wagga and back at work, Mr Hume is recovering but family and friends want to do their bit to help him get moving again.

The Mountain Bike Club of Wagga is holding a 90-minute Enduro event on its six-hour track at Pomingalarna at the weekend, which is normally held as a prelude to a six-hour event in April.

Club member Paul Johanson said this year the event would also be used as a fundraiser for Mr Hume.

"We've always had this event as a prelude to our main event," he said.

"This year, because of Stu's accident and because he's been a founding member of our club, we're going to use it to help him out."

A $5 entry fee will be charged for the event, which will be held from 9am on Sunday, March 21, and any riders who are not members of Mountain Bike Australia will be required to pay an extra $15 for a day licence, which covers insurance requirements.

Proceeds will go towards helping Mr Hume buy a car and regain some independence.

"Stuart's going pretty well," Mr Johanson said.

"I think he's doing a couple of hours of physio a day."

Mr Johanson said anyone who doesn't normally ride with the group is still welcome to join the day's event, which will involve riding laps of an 11.4km course.

"We're really hoping for 100 people (to participate) but anything between 50 and 70 would be great," he said.

Club members were busy at the weekend getting the course ready for the event, after it suffered some damage in the recent heavy rains.

Mr Johanson said the focus was on getting the course safe, but it should be in top condition by the time the six-hour Enduro event is held in early April.
