THE Wagga Poultry Club made a significant change to its sale format that paid off when the club held its first-ever poultry auction yesterday.
The auction was held at the Wagga Showground in the Bob Venn poultry pavilion and the new format generated significant public interest, with about 500 people in attendance.
Present on the day were 130 buyers who were invited to attend the 9am viewing before the auction commenced at 10am. There were 465 pens entered with 1500 birds in total.
A total of 61 vendors travelled from across NSW and interstate to take part in the auction.
"Sales were fairly successful," poultry club publicity officer Donna Warner said.
"The auction format tends to bring better money into the club, so we can improve poultry sheds and other costs associated with our not-for-profit club."
A single light sussex pullet sold for $64, a pair of blue indian game bantams sold for $105 and a trio of marans sold for $225.
Numerous other varieties of poultry were available including geese, ducks, peacocks and turkeys and both purebred and cross-bred fowls.
A pair of turkeys sold for $110.
The day was deemed a success with organisers pleased with the turnout of buyers and sellers.
Auctioneer, Clint McInnes, was very happy with the outcomes of the auction.
