TRAVELLERS dropping by to check out Gundagai's Dog on the Tuckerbox yesterday were divided in their opinions on whether to move the historic dog into town or leave it where it is.
In a straw poll conducted with visitors by The Daily Advertiser, half thought the dog should remain while an equal number saw the benefit of moving it into Gundagai.
Dianne Lee and her children, Joshua, 17, and Jessica, 18, took a quick detour to see the iconic dog on their long journey home to Queensland after visiting family in Wagga.
She believed some improvements to the location could be made to ensure it was easy for to find but that the dog should stay put.
"I think they should leave it where it is and make it more of a tourist attraction," she said.
"I think it just needs more signage. We actually drove past it once when we were coming down (to Wagga) because we missed the sign.
"But they should leave it where it is. It would be a bit like picking up an ANZAC statue and moving it."
Wollongong resident Ken Wood disagreed with Ms Lee, saying he found it unusual that the dog would be situated so far from the township.
"It's a bit strange," he said.
Sydney residents Paul and Sue Viegel stopped by with their son Liam, 15, on the way back home from Albury.
For Mr Viegel, the dog was a must-see.
"Personally, I would have found it anyway, even if it were in Gundagai. It's an icon," he said.
