Greens warn state government over choice of contractor

17 May, 2008 12:03 PM
Greens health spokeswoman Lee Rhiannon called on the Department of Health to explain how the company responsible for the Bathurst Hospital bungle could be handed a $275 million project.

Capital Insight was announced as the winner of the multi-million-dollar contract to redevelop the Wagga hospital this week.

Yet Mrs Rhiannon said the company’s history should have ruled it out.

“Surely the incompetence exhibited in the disastrous development of Bathurst Hospital should have rung warning bells with NSW Health,” Mrs Rhiannon said.

“In announcing the winning tender, NSW Health left the Bathurst redevelopment off the list of hospital works completed by Capital Insight.”

Capital Insight’s director of operations, Robert Hickson, told the Advertiser this week it was the government which was ultimately responsible for hiring the John Holland Group to build the Bathurst Hospital.

“John Holland Group was appointed by the government through the tender process. They were chosen by the committee, despite what was reported in the media,” he said.

Mr Hickson said the evaluation panel which hired the builders had consisted of four government representatives and one from Capital Insight. However, he admitted Capital Insight had put forward a recommendation for the appointment.

Along with Bathurst Hospital, Capital Insight has also worked on the Royal Prince Alfred, Concord, Westmead and Canterbury hospitals.

The Office of NSW Health Minister Reba Meagher replied through a media release saying lessons had been learnt from the Bathurst case which will be applied to all future cases.
