FORMER Murrumbidgee MP Lin Gordon will be remembered for his enormous contribution to Leeton and the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) according to his political protege, recently retired Labor MLC Tony Catanzariti.Mr Catanzariti joined a handful of high profile Riverina residents to pay tribute to one of his political mentors, who died peacefully in his Wagga home on Thursday, aged 94.Mr Gordon held office in the NSW Legislative Assembly for 14 years from 1970 to 1984 and was a member of cabinet for the last eight years of his career. Most notably, he held the water resources portfolio in the early 80s, and was unwavering in his support of the irrigators and communities of the MIA."He's been a great asset to country people," Mr Catanzariti said."He was so genuine and he was never one to run anybody down."He was a wonderful contributor to the community and there's no doubt he will be sorely missed."Although he will be most widely remembered for his myriad political achievements, Mr Gordon was also passionate about the trots, virtually building Leeton's track, the Lin Gordon Paceway, from the ground up; as well as at one stage presiding over the Leeton Harness Racing Club, of which he is a life member. According to Leeton race caller Allan Wallet, the town will be eternally grateful for the high quality of amenities secured by Mr Gordon."He's responsible for making Leeton what it is today in terms of amenities," Mr Wallet said. And while current Murrumbidgee MP Adrian Piccoli is from the other side of politics to Mr Gordon, he had nothing but praise for his predecessor."He was one of the most highly regarded members of parliament during his period," Mr Piccoli said.A celebration mass will be held for Mr Gordon at St Michael's Cathedral in Wagga tomorrow from 1.45pm, with a family graveside service being held in Leeton today.
