Fight night at Kildare

AN ORGANISED “fight club” at Kildare Catholic College has resulted in several students being suspended.

The school this week admitted the incident had happened, saying the children may have been inspired by recent martial art and boxing contests in Wagga.

The Daily Advertiser believes two boys in Year 7 and Year 9 organised to fight twice last week in the boys’ toilets and were holding a rematch when caught by teachers.

Staff were alerted to the underground fights after video of the first bout was found on a mobile phone.

There were no injuries in the fights, however, one of the children was knocked down during the fight but continued on.

A group of several students has now been suspended by the school and it is understood one of the combatants also has a history of poor behaviour and could be facing expulsion.

Deputy principal Simon Huntly said the whole situation went against the school’s philosophy.

“It was an error of judgement on their part, the parents have been contacted and disciplinary action has been taken,” Mr Huntly said.

“Maybe they picked up the idea from

one of the fight nights, I don’t know, but we have high expectations of our students and what happened goes against the beliefs of our school.”

It was the first time such an incident has happened at the school but not the first time students have come under close scrutiny.

Head trainer at Wagga’s Street Alert Gym, Liam Priest said some students lacked discipline.

“We’ve stopped training students from Kildare, they were a non-stop hassle and lacked discipline,” he said.

“To say that a fight night could inspire these kids to start their own fights is a bit of a stretch, I think with the amount of mixed martial art DVD’s and TV the kids are getting the wrong idea.”

Kildare students were made aware of the fights during an assembly on Monday, where they were all warned about the ramifications of such incidents and Mr Huntly said he was confident there would be no repeat.

This is an outrage students at our school should be able to learn martial arts and boxing but only for self defence. if you ban students from learning these arts the students learning them will be outraged and it is a totall violation of human rights and free will. If you wish to keep the students happy and moralized i demand you remove this ban before it goes out of control. Connor.P.Smith

To the editor There are no fight clubs in Kilcare. When did you come up with this stuff? These are many students that have good reputations that you are just destroying! Now all the kids at kildare are being stared out down town and in other public places just because you had to put this in the paper; maybe you should have just left it to your self and dealt with it instead of bring the whole town into it! Its ridicules! You’re a bunch of idiots! What the boys did was the wrong thing to do but this has just been blown out of proportion, people get into worse fights at other schools; and they just get suspended, but here you are expelling people, you should have a good look at yourself boy. You also said that the boys have poor behavior. How do you known this. You’re full of it. Everyone at kildare is ashamed of this.

Judging by your spelling, you're obviously getting a quality education where you are.

I think that Street Alert have every right to ban students if they behave in a way that is disrespectful and lacks discipline. Perhaps they mean banning Kildare from organised school sport activities rather than on an individual basis. The gym has a responsibility to ensure their teachings aren't used for idiotic violence in the boy's toilets at lunch time, and if banning students from learning is what it takes, then so be it. It may not be fair to the "good" students, but life isn't always fair, and sometimes actions need to be taken for the greater good. Also, in this day and age, with spell check available on every computer, abominations of spelling and grammar (such as those showcased above) should not exist.

Iam a student of Kildare as well as a young teenager in today's society. As a student of Kildare, and a teenager, who has quite reguarly heard many stories about other schools in this district. I can proudly say that, i'm a student of Kildare Catholic College and there is NO other school i would rather be at, then to be at Kildare. Kildare is both a friendly environment and well spirited school. We have community days in which, us children learn the beliefs and morals of others. At this school, we are disciplined to a high extent but at the same time are given the support and warm welcoming from the staff. Kildare should not be judged on a 'one of incident', but be judged on their generosity and kindness. As Kildare have had many fundraising days, where the students and the kildare community have raised enourmous amounts of money for charity's. Kildare is a wonderful school!

I tell you what is 'ridiculous', is the suggestion that Kildare students lack discipline & the lack of research you have done on Kildare's achievements over the last few years! They were placed in the top 200 schools in 2007/08, an extremely good achievement coming from a country school. In 2007 in particular, three students received a UAI of over 99, with six others receiving UAI's over over 90. In 2007 & 2009, they were state champions in Australian Football. Jake Marks, a former Kildare student, is a current Australian kickboxing title holder for his division, imagine if he had been banned from training, his career would not have been where it is at now. I could go on, but I think I don't need to say anymore. And to say Kildare lacks discipline...
