FAMILY First has entered Rhonda Lever as a candidate for the seat of Riverina, but not really.Mrs Lever will contest the seat, vacated by Kay Hull, on August 21 without ever stepping foot in the electorate as she is based in Sydney.A Family First spokesperson yesterday said Mrs Lever had only agreed to stand as a candidate on the basis that she did not have to campaign, answer questions or participate in any way."I'm embarrassed to tell you but someone is better than no one," they said.Mrs Lever stood in the 2007 election as a candidate in the Albury-based seat of Farrer but lost out to Sussan Ley.The little-known candidate was nominated by her party on Tuesday and was only discovered when her name was read out during the ballot draw in Narrandera, where she gained the second position. The Australian Electoral Office in Narrandera said Mrs Lever was registered in Sydney, meaning the Riverina candidate may not be allowed to vote for herself. It is understood Family First had attempted to recruit a Riverina-based candidate but after nobody came forward, chose Mrs Lever as a last resort."We've decided to have a candidate stand to spread the Family First brand and grow the vote for the Senate nominees," the spokesperson said."Obviously we wanted a Wagga person to stand but hopefully we have better luck next time."
