Drivers warned to keep their distance from fallen lines

04 Nov, 2009 01:00 AM
IMPATIENT Wagga drivers could have been killed when they drove over downed powerlines on Monday afternoon.

Several people were seen driving over or close to lines that had fallen on Ivan Jack Drive on Monday afternoon. They weren't live, but Country Energy has issued a warning.

Country Energy regional general manager David Nardi said it was a concern vehicles were driving over lines and people were coming within the recommended eight-metre exclusion area.

Mr Nardi said the line had fallen due to a burnt-out connection and protection measures had ensured it was deactivated before hitting the ground.

Residents are also warned prolonged hot and dusty weather can lead to electrical fires and downed powerlines.

"Dust can get into the insulators over long, hot and dry periods and if we get light rain it can then turn to mud, or if there is no rain then pole fires can be sparked," Mr Nardi said.

"Residents need to be aware that these things can happen, although rare, and to contact Country Energy immediately."

Mr Nardi said experienced staff performed annual inspections of all lines to ensure they were clean and working correctly.

About 300 customers were affected by Monday's outage, with power restored within a couple of hours, while traffic lights around Baylis and Fitzmaurice streets were also affected.
