THE Wagga business community is in shock at the sudden passing of well-known proprietor and director of Wagga Mobile Cranes Don Harper.
Mr Harper, 82, was nearing the end of a month-long cruise on the Queen Elizabeth as it made its way into Wellington, New Zealand, yesterday morning when he slumped over during breakfast and stopped breathing.
Despite an hour-long effort made by medical staff, he was unable to be revived.
The sudden loss has left the community mourning a man who had an unwaivering committment to the community.
Managing director of Mr Harper’s three businesses, DG Harper Pty Ltd, Wagga Mobile Cranes and Endurance Sheds, Tom Curtis, said Mr Harper would be remembered man of his word who would always assist where he could.
“Don was a very astute business person who had the foresight and could see the chance to develop and expand, meaning he achieved a lot in business,” Mr Curtis said.
“He was a well respected and substantial employer who would generously sponsor and donate to charities; there probably isn’t a charity in town which hasn’t benefited from the company.”
Mr Harper leaves behind a strong legacy in community work, including his time with the Wagga Kangaroos Rugby League Club to which he was a life member and patron of, according to club life member Tom Looney.
“He was a passionate supporter of the red and blue and served on the committee for over 40 years including 16 years as the club’s treasurer,” Mr Looney said.
“Don was very good to the club’s players, often providing them with employment to help them out when they couldn’t find work.
“He will be forever missed by all who knew him.”
