THE gruesome discovery of a dead dog which was propped up in a baby’s stroller on the side of the road has disgusted animal rescue advocates in the region.
The dog, believed to be of staffy breed, was found last Thursday on the side of Red Hill Road, its bloated body covered in flies.
The man who discovered it, Ben Pattison, said it appeared to have been decapitated and looked as though it had been deliberately set up to attract attention.
“It was sick, it sounds like something a serial killer would do,” he said.
“I was just driving ... and saw it. I thought what if there is a kid inside, so I doubled back and went to check.
“It was on the side of the road in one of those cheap baby strollers so it looked like they wanted people to see it.”
The police don’t have any record of the grisly find, but animal rescuer Lorene Cross said acts like this show why punishment for animal cruelty should be more severe.
Ms Cross is the founder of the Snowy Mountains Animal Rescue Team and said the condition some dogs are in when she rescues them from the pound is despicable.
“It’s quite upsetting, you wish you get your hands on some of these people,” she said yesterday.
“They get away with some horrific things with animals.”
The RSPCA investigates thousands of complaints of
animal cruelty each year and NSW leads the list for the country, with more than 15,000 investigations carried out in 2010-11 alone.
The number of complaints has increased every year annually since 2005 and in 2010-11 the RSPCA saw 91 convictions in NSW.
