Dam replenished to more than 70 percent

06 Sep, 2010 12:00 AM
BOTH Blowering Dam and Burrinjuck Dam are now filled to more than 70 per cent for the first time in years.

Blowering Dam was at 77 per cent yesterday, which is a huge improvement from being as low as 30 per cent in February this year.

In May Burrinjuck Dam was below 40 per cent capacity and now it is 70 per cent full.

Owner and manager of Blowering Holiday Park, Ron Schwind, has not seen Blowering Dam this full since his childhood in Tumut.

He moved back to the area about six years ago and took over the Blowering Dam Holiday Park last November.

"For the district to have the dam full it's brilliant, it's a great start to spring and it looks like we'll be having a bit of a wet summer as well," he said.

"For the holiday park it means more people will be doing water sports, we have a lot of skiers around here."

Mr Schwind believes about 10 years ago the dam was about 80 per cent, but the last time it was full was in the mid 1980s.

He is cautiously confident that more steady rain can bring the dam up to capacity.

"I think if this rain keeps up, and we are due for two more wet patches this month, and if it falls heavy, we can probably get to 100 per cent," he said.

The lowest Mr Schwind has seen the dam is about 4 per cent which was only a few years ago.

"Now the farmers are very happy, it looks like it will be a good season for them," he said.
