WAGGA City Council will welcome the challenges brought by the estimated 25 per cent population growth, according to general manager Lyn Russell.
Wagga's population could grow to 72,031 by 2027, as reported by the Property Council of Australia yesterday and Mrs Russell believes the city is perfectly placed to take advantage.
"Wagga has been recognised as one of Australia's major growth centres and we will look to meet the challenges of creating jobs and providing infrastructure," she said.
"This city has a robust economy that combined with expanding military bases, a university and important projects such as the Bomen Industrial Area and Riverside is well placed for the future.
"Council must ensure funding for those projects and deliver a Local Environment Plan that can provide the land necessary for such a population increase."
Wagga currently has a population of 57,431 (according to the report) and has few infrastructure problems but with the estimated population increase, issues could arise.
It was an exciting time to be involved in the future of Wagga, Ms Russell said.
"These are some very exciting times for Wagga, as a city it has got everything going for it," she said.
"We must be mindful to provide adequate land for housing, roads to reduce traffic congestion and the proper infrastructure to deal with a large population.
"We are halfway between Melbourne and Sydney, so people will want to come here and we must provide the quality of life that is required in a big city."
