TUMUT residents will get their first adult shop after councillors approved a development application for the proposed Wynyard Street business. After twice delaying their decision to carry a motion on the issue, councillors acceded to legal advice and voted 5-2 to allow the sex shop development to go ahead at an extraordinary meeting last night. After spending "less than $2000" on two pieces of legal advice, councillors were told they had no option but to approve the adult shop as it complied with Tumut's local environmental plan (LEP).If councillors again voted against the advice the shire would have faced a potentially costly legal battle.Tumut mayor Trina Thomson, who had continually urged councillors in previous debates to approve the DA, was relieved the issue had last night been finalised."There was lengthy discussion and debate on the issue," Councillor Thomson said. "Cr Sue Bolger made the point that it should not be in a seedy back alley, so in some ways, the (Wynyard Street) location is much easier to monitor and discourage inappropriate behaviour."I thought that was a valid point."There had been 112 submissions opposing the adult store and it is not known when the businesses will be open. Also at the extraordinary meeting, councillors rejected a motion to donate $10,000 to the Snowy Hydro Southcare rescue helicopter service. Instead, in response to the motion's defeat, councillors voted to donate $5000 to SouthCare and another $5000 to Telstra Childflight rescue helicopter service.
