THE Cootamundra Rugby League Club is to fork out more than $500 compensation for damage to a West Wyalong hotel caused by its players who stayed there during a recent football competition.
Bulldogs president Steve Sellars said yesterday the players involved had “put up their hands” immediately in claiming responsibility for the damage in a room at the White Tank Hotel on Main Street.
It is understood some of the players who were in West Wyalong for the pre-season knockout competition during the last weekend in February took a fire extinguisher from a storage cupboard in the hallway.
They then activated it in a bedroom, splashing foam on the walls and carpets, leaving the hotel with clean-up costs of about $600 to have the carpet cleaned and fire extinguisher re-filled.
Mr Sellars described the incident as “disappointing”.
“The persons involved were quite agreeable and put their hands up and we’ve said we’ll pay the clean-up bill,” he said.
“It’s a little bit disappointing ... it’s something we stress pretty seriously with the players, that when they go away they represent the club and behave.
“We’ve spoken to the licensee. There was a bit of mess in one of the rooms and the committee has met and agreed to pay the cleaning bill.
“And as far as we’re concerned, we’ve moved on.”
A representative of management from the White Tank Hotel confirmed the club has agreed to pay cleaning costs but commented that the club “might have trouble” finding accommodation for its players in West Wyalong in the future.
