FOUR hundred students at Cootamundra High School got an extended recess when a fire broke out in a classroom yesterday.
The fire in a power point in a classroom on a second floor was discovered by a teacher about 11am.
Because it was recess time, students were outside enjoying their break when fire trucks started arriving.
NSW Fire Brigades captain from Cootamundra station Les Carr said thick smoke filled the room and hallway but only minor damage was sustained to the wall near the power point.
A Country Energy crew disabled electricity to the school while it was extinguished.
A spokesman for the NSW Department of Education and Training said classes continued without disruption.
“The high school’s acting principal Andrew Turvey is praising the quick action of a teacher who noticed sparking near a light switch and isolated the electrical circuit,” he said.
Police are also investigating a graffiti attack at the weekend in which vandals sprayed a number of walls with red spray paint.
