PARENTS have resorted to driving their children to school rather than risk them being left unsupervised on an 80kmh stretch of road to wait for the school bus.
Glenoak mum Danielle Bennett said she cannot trust Fearnes buses to get her three primary school-age kids safely to school any more.
Changes to the bus routes which came into effect on November 3 means her kids are among those who have to swap buses at the Lloyd Road bus stop under the supervision of Fearnes buses school liaison officer Don Gregor.
Mr Gregor arrives at the bus stop early each morning to walk children safely across Lloyd Road and to usher others between two different buses.
But Mr Gregor’s duty could be cut at any time, according to Fearnes general manager Bill Allen.
“It is our intention to have him there a little bit longer but we’ll play it by ear,” he said.
Mrs Bennett said that level of uncertainty gave her no choice but to drive her kids to school and many parents felt the same way.
“I could put my kids on the bus tomorrow morning and he might not be there. There’s no commitment. If someone were to be there all the time it would ease my mind. Most of us are driving our kids to school now,” she said.
Wagga City Council said yesterday its traffic committee will hold an extraordinary meeting in December.
“(The committee) will consider the various issues that surround this area. Council, police and RTA are members of the traffic committee,” infrastructure planning manager Lindsay Tanner said.
“Council is on a proactive program for improving bus stops and shelters in the Glenoak and Lloyd suburbs including bus turning bays to allow the buses off the road.”
Council hopes to secure a new shelter for the bus stop on Lloyd Road through a State Government grant of $150,000 it applied for in June.
