POLICE yesterday said it was too early to say if skeletal remains found in the Belanglo State Forest last month might belong to either of two women with links to the Riverina.Amber Haigh, from Kingsvale near Young, was 19 years old when she went missing from the Campbelltown railway station on June 5, 2002.Niamh Maye, an 18-year-old backpacker from Armidale, disappeared from near Tumut on March 31, 2002.Extensive searches for the women have failed to find any trace of them. The discovery of remains in Belanglo State Forest on August 29 has focused new police attention on cases of missing women.Cootamundra police crime manager, Detective Inspector Dean Smith, said details of the Amber Haigh and Niamh Maye cases had been sent to Strikeforce Hickson, which is investigating the grisly discovery.Police believe the remains belong to a female aged between 15 and 20 who died between 10 and 12 years ago.A T-shirt found near the remains may belong to the victim. It is believed the T-shirt was sold in shops between 2003 and 2006, which may cast a shadow of doubt that the remains are Amber or Niahm. But a spokeswoman for State Crime Command yesterday was not ruling anything out."There is still DNA and other forensic testing to be done, and until that is completed we don't have any identification," she said. She said the estimated age of the bones and the T-shirt was a broad one at this time.
