Australian flags waved and heads were held high as ex-servicemen and women marched down the main street towards the Victory Memorial Gardens for the commemoration ceremony.

High school students who carried banners in the parade were later invited to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph.

Tunes from The Riverina Concert Band, Wagga and District Pipe Band and Australian Army Band Kapooka filled the air.

Wing commander at RAAF Base Wagga John Herlihy gave the keynote address at the commemorative ceremony and said Anzac Day was “our day”.

“Anzac Day is the essence of what it is to be an Australian or New Zealander,” he said.

Wing Cdr Herlihy said the reputation of our Anzacs was admired and envied around the world.

“They committed themselves without hesitation and fought with courage, skill and tenacity,” he said.
