Adult retailers hit back at campaigners

05 Sep, 2008 12:16 PM
THE owners of Simply Risque have hit back at claims they will contribute to the moral decay of Fitzmaurice Street if they are allowed to publicly display their products.

Director Ian Conway-Powles said yesterday the community should be more concerned about the safety of children going to church than those seeing lingerie on display.

Mr Conway-Powles and his business partner Helen Berger have applied for council approval to dispplay lingerie and costumes in their shopfront.

“We are an adult retail store, not a sex shop as we have been described. We sell adult products, not sex. If you want to buy sex, go to a brothel,” he said. “Parents should be protesting the churches, particularly at the moment in reference to Bathurst. They should be demanding answers about the safety of their children instead of fretting about a legitamate business trying to promote its products in a tasteful, community-accepted standard.”

Two Wagga mums have urged concerned parents to lodge applications against the proposal by Tuesday.

What do you sell then? What is Adult retail? because last time I checked everything the fell under the hammer of "Adult" was restricted to 18 years and over. What else are you going to put in an adult display apart from Dildo's, Amusing Condoms, and Pornographic material. It might not be sex, but it's society's best attempts at imitating it. Why does everybody walk out of their with the purchased items hidden from sight. It's because they're embarrassed. do we really want the younger populace being exposed to this sort of material before they're 18?

I'd have to agree with Ian Conway-Powles. Your kids are a thousand times more likely to be molested by a priest or minister than they are by some sex-crazed "stranger" in the main street of Wagga. If the two women who are campaigning to have this business closed are concerned with the "moral decay" of Fitzmaurice Street, perhaps they should be focussing their attention on the hotels and purveyors of nicotine products located in that end of town. Alcohol and it's cohort, nicotine, kill and corrupt more Australians than all other drugs combined, times 10+. One can only wonder what the agenda of the two women who have made complaints actually is. If these two women have some kind of problem with sex, I suggest they seek counselling. Sex, after all, is perfectly normal. Swilling alcohol and breathing smoke is not. Sex, per se, kills no-one. Alcohol and tobacco kill tens of thousands of Australians every year. Perhaps these ladies might consider campaigning for the persecution of publicans and those who sell tobacco, the real purveyors of death and misery worldwide. It is, after all, a widely believed myth that "marijuana (whatever that is) leads to harder drugs." The truth is that "alcohol and cigarettes lead to harder drugs." Not in my whole life have I ever met a drug abuser who didn't start with one or both of these killer-drugs.

Over 500 church clergy have been dealt with in Australian courts for sexually abusing young kids. Not one person from the adult retail industry that Ian Conway-Powles represents has been charged with this offence. The facts speak for themselves. The two women who are objecting to the shop display will, at the bottom of their objections, have a religious argument to back them up. Its hypocrisy at its worst. Sex shops provide honest and reliable sex education materials and information for adult couples and there is no shame in that. Local council should get out of people's bedrooms.

The Retail Owner. In answer to the first commentator here, I would like to note that he has remained (as is his right) anonymous......rather strange that all others have had no problem with identifying themselves at least in part. What are You trying to hide? To be specific “anonymous”, we sell adult novelties that range from silly frivoulous items that elict giggles and laughter from the people that see and buy them, (adults within our store) through to adult “sex toys” that are specifically martial aids. We also retail many items of a non-sexual description that are readily available in many other “novelty stores” in Wagga Wagga and beyond. We also sell many items of clothing that range from lingerie through to stockings, wigs, hosiery, costumes and hats. These are freely on display in many other retail establishments in the Wagga Wagga CBD and beyond. The only items that are “Restricted” are adult magazines and adult dvd’s and movies. All others fall under novelty or clothing descriptions. You walk out of most retail stores anywhere in Australia with your purchases in bags or wrapped, so why does that distiguish Adult Retail Stores from any others? Many people in todays society are embarassed about sex and their sexuality because from a very young age they are taught by all around them from their parents through to the schools and the Churches, that Sex is Dirty! That their beautiful God given bodies are “disgusting” ...and then we wonder in aghast why we suddenly have so many people that are screwed-up and hung-up about sex. Something that is wonderful and natural, the “wowsers” make us feel guilty about because that gives the wowsers Power! Many of the opponents of healthy sexual attitudes are the very organisations that purport to be our “moral guardians and saviours”, the Churches. Yet it is these very organisations that are generating the hundreds of child molesters that are being prosecuted and convicted over the last few years. Why arent these women, who are so vigourously seeking to defend Wagga Wagga’s morals, not seeking a Federal Government inquiry into this deplorable situation? To answer your last question of whether we want to expose under 18’s to items of a sexual nature? No we dont! Over the last 12 months, we have had many different window displays that have drawn nothing but admiration and compliments about their tastefulness from many of our customers and the general public. We will be maintaining this high standard of display, carefully recognising that we have a mature and responsible duty to maintain the delicate sensibilities of the burhgers of our fair city. We extend the invitation to any concerned citizen to approach us if they need to assuage their fears about our window displays. However, we will continue to set a high standard of good taste and responsibility.
