A DEVELOPMENT application for a $37.5 million truck interchange structure for Tarcutta is being considered by Wagga City Council.
The development application for the site, located four kilometres south of Tarcutta on the Hume Highway, was presented to council this week by Lennon Salvestro Planning Pty Ltd on behalf of Tarcutta Truckstop Services Pty Ltd, owned by David Larkin.
The proposed multi-million dollar truck interchange boasts a 24-hour service station, food court, commercial fast-food outlet, driver accommodation and change rooms, a vehicle service centre, truck wash and amenities block.
Planning consultant Garry Salvestro said the highway service centre would provide a much-needed rest place for truckies passing through the region, providing everything they could dream of for a comfortable break.
"There is parking for just under 400 vehicles and 60 per cent of the parking area is for trucks," he said.
"It's totally geared towards servicing and accommodating the heavy vehicle transport industry and will provide all the facilities, which are currently scattered down the highway, in one place."
Pending approval from council, Mr Salvestro said construction could get under way within months, providing employment opportunities for the people of Tarcutta.
"It's pretty exciting and it will help create jobs for the town," he said.
"Once construction is completed, there will be 80 jobs created direct from operating and obviously there will be additional work created throughout construction."
Mr Salvestro said stage one works had been completed following the approval by council of an earlier development application to carry out access and earthworks as well as the concept plan for the remainder of the development.
He said planners had worked closely with the Road and Traffic Authority to determine the best location for on and off ramps and an overpass so southbound drivers could access the truck stop.
