A CONTRACT for $33 million to prevent flooding at Blowering Dam was awarded by the State Government yesterday.Successful tenderer, Macmahon Construction, is expected to start the works in May on a parapet wall and spillway modifications.Up to 30 jobs should be created, according to Minister for Water, Phillip Costa.“Blowering Dam is one of a number of dams in regional NSW that are scheduled for major safety upgrades to handle the most extreme flood events,” Mr Costa said.“Macmahon Construction has indicated they will source a good deal of their needs from the local area. I understand that includes plant and equipment such as excavators and trucks as well as labour and materials such as concrete.”The Tumut project is scheduled for completion in 2011.It includes a two-metre parapet wall on the crest of the dam and an extension to the spillway chute to contain high flood discharges. The 40-year-old structure will be significantly improved by the project, Mr Costa said.
